Maureen Spencer, RN,M.Ed. has been board certified in infection control (CIC) for over 30 years and is a Corporate Infection Preventionist Consultant. She is based in Boston and provides consultative and educational resources as a corporate consultant for Universal Health Services, a 25 hospital system in 7 states.
Maureen's infection control career includes Manager of Infection Control at New England Baptist Hospital, an orthopedic specialty institution in Boston (2003-2010), a Legal Nurse Consultant (1996-2003), Director of Infection Control at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (1985-1996), Infection Control Epidemiologist at VA Medical Center, West Roxbury, MA (1978-1985) and Infection Control Nurse at Carney Hospital (1973-1978). She has served many positions on the national and local boards of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC).
As one of the early pioneers in infection control, she was awarded the APIC National Carole DeMille Award in 1990 and was selected as one of the APIC Heroes of Infection Prevention in 2007 for her work in establishing a MRSA and Staph aureus Elimination Program at New England Baptist. Maureen was one of the contributing authors in Barbara Gruedemann's Comprehensive Perioperative Nursing Textbook and contributed to the original APIC Text Book. She has presented numerous research abstracts at national conferences and published peer reviewed articles on healthcare associated infections. "Establishing a Culture of Safety: A 7 S Bundle for SSIs" is a presentation she has delivered at the American Operating Room Nurses Congress (2009), Association for Professionals in Infection Control Conference (2012), National Association of Orthopedic Nurses Convention (2010), Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (2009), International Orthopedic Nursing Congress - Singapore (2012), Asian Perioperative Nursing Congress (2012), College of Surgeons of ASIA (2012), the Semmelweis Congress - Vienna (2015) and at many local chapters, hospitals and educational events. It showcases a unique bundled approach to effectively prevent surgical site infections.
In May 2012 she was selected as one of the "Who's Who of Infection Prevention" by Infection Control Today. She is a frequent international speaker working with infection control, operating room nurses, surgeons and physicians in Singapore, Jakarta - Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia, Cagayan and Manila - Philippines, Paris - France, Istanbul - Turkey, Buenos Aires - Argentina, Toronto, Vancouver, St John's - Canada, Vienna-Austria and South Korea.
